UNDERSTANDING PIGMENTATION

Why Does Pigmentation Develop?

Melanin gives our skin its colour, but when pigment production becomes uneven or overactive, darker patches and spots can develop. Sun exposure, inflammation, hormones and skin injury can all influence how and where pigment appears.

Not all pigmentation behaves the same way. Sun spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation may have relatively identifiable triggers, while melasma is a more complex, chronic condition influenced by hormones, UV and visible light exposure, vascular changes and inflammation.

How Aerolase helps

Why Aerolase for Melasma & Hyperpigmentation?

Aerolase Neo Elite uses a 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength that penetrates into the skin, where laser energy is absorbed by excess melanin. This allows us to target unwanted pigment at different depths while minimizing unnecessary heating of the surrounding skin.

Melasma is more complex than excess pigment alone. Vascular activity and inflammation can also contribute to the condition, so Aerolase's ability to interact with hemoglobin as well as melanin gives us another way to approach the visible components of melasma.

Treatment is intentionally controlled and conservative. With melasma especially, more aggressive treatment is not necessarily better. Our goal is to gradually improve unwanted pigmentation while minimizing the heat and inflammation that can trigger rebound pigmentation.

Safe for a Wide Range of Skin Tones

Aerolase technology is designed to treat pigmentation across a wide range of skin tones, including melanin-rich skin, where avoiding excessive epidermal heating is particularly important.

A Personalized Plan

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Pigmentation varies significantly from person to person. The number of treatments recommended will depend on the type and depth of pigmentation, your skin tone, how your skin responds and your goals.

A series of treatments is often recommended for gradual improvement. Melasma is a chronic, relapsing condition, so ongoing sun protection, appropriate home care and occasional maintenance treatments may be important for maintaining results.

Ready to Take the Next Step?

You don't need to know whether you're dealing with melasma, sun damage or another form of pigmentation before coming in. We'll assess your skin, discuss what you're seeing and create a treatment plan that's appropriate for you.

What to expect

Before, During & After

Before

We'll assess your pigmentation, review your skin and provide any necessary pre-treatment instructions. Consistent sun protection is especially important before treating pigmentation.

During

Treatment takes about 45–60 minutes. Most clients describe a warm, gentle sensation as the laser passes over the skin. No numbing or cooling is typically required.

After

You can return to normal activities right away. Mild pinkness may occur briefly, with little to no downtime. We'll provide simple post-treatment care instructions.

More than the laser

A Complete Approach to Pigmentation

Aerolase can help improve unwanted pigmentation, but long-term pigment management often requires more than laser treatment alone. We also consider sun exposure, inflammation, skin barrier health, home care and the type of pigmentation we're treating.

For melasma especially, daily sun protection and an appropriate home-care routine are essential. Because melasma is chronic and can be reactivated by light, hormones and other triggers, our goal is long-term management rather than promising a permanent cure.
