SKIN CONCERN

Psoriasis

Calmer, more comfortable skin starts with understanding inflammation.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory condition that causes skin cells to build up more quickly than normal, creating areas of thickened, scaly or irritated skin. Symptoms can improve and flare over time.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR SKIN

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated condition that affects how quickly skin cells are produced and shed. Immune signals accelerate the normal skin-cell cycle, causing cells to accumulate at the surface instead of shedding gradually.

This buildup creates the raised, scaly plaques associated with psoriasis. The surrounding inflammation can also cause redness, itching, tenderness or discomfort.

Psoriasis often follows a pattern of flares and quieter periods, and symptoms can vary considerably from person to person.

CAUSES & RISK FACTORS

Why does it happen?

Psoriasis develops from a combination of immune system activity and genetic susceptibility. In people who are predisposed to psoriasis, certain factors can trigger or worsen inflammation and lead to a flare.

Genetics

Psoriasis can run in families, although having a family history does not mean you will necessarily develop it.

Immune System Activity

Psoriasis is immune-mediated. Overactive immune signalling drives inflammation and speeds up the normal skin-cell cycle.

Stress

Physical or emotional stress can trigger psoriasis or contribute to flares in some people.

Infections & Illness

Certain infections, particularly streptococcal infections, can trigger psoriasis or cause existing psoriasis to flare.

Skin Injury & Irritation

Cuts, burns, friction, sunburn or other skin trauma can sometimes cause psoriasis to develop in the affected area - a response known as the Koebner phenomenon.

YOUR TREATMENT JOURNEY

What to expect
